Here's an authenticATLANTA POP FESTIVAL
concert ticket stub
from July 5th, 1969
.
This is a genuine vintage ticket stub that came from one of the
earliest
and most successful rock music festivals,
ever!
This event was even 6 weeks before Woodstock. It turned out 1969 would be the peak year for rock festivals, and the success of this one led the promoter Alex Cooley to hold the 1970 Atlanta Pop festival the following year. That event would be even more successful and closely resemble Woodstock with numerous top acts over 3 days and reached an attendance around 400,000.
By 1970 things died down, and there would only be a couple of major rock festivals that whole year with Atlanta being the most popular by far. Atlanta had achieved something none one else had, not even in California, an even more successful reincarnation the following year.
This is why the Atlanta Pop Festival has become one of the most coveted rock concert festival events and probably stands only 2nd to Woodstock in popularity. Atlanta had the similar cool vibes and peaceful colorful counter culture crowd from that special era. All the news articles about the Atlanta event were very favorable. The young hip audience was very orderly and there to have a good time. They even showed a very peaceful tolerance as they braved the harsh heat and sun conditions with limited facilities over that weekend.
It also turned out to be the largest audience that Led Zeppelin would ever play in front of, until only possibly at Knebworth which wasn't until a full decade later.
It is super hard to find a 1969 stub. These were very well made tickets, extra strong and durable ticket stock, much more than most concert tickets. The stub is in awesome condition and the one seen in the photos.

The 1969 Atlanta International Pop Festival was really a rock festival that was held at the Atlanta International Raceway in Hampton, just outside of Atlanta, Georgia over a month before Woodstock.
This was a big deal at the time, as the South was not at all considered in the rock world. Pretty much viewed as rednecks probably! Yet some local small business men knew of the one or two earlier festivals in California had their own idea and managed to pull it off. Crowd estimates ranged as high as 150,000 on hot days with temperatures reaching close to 100 degrees. Local fire departments did their part to help by using their fire hoses to spray all cool off the crowd. It turned out to be a very peaceful, energetic and loud festival without any problems at all. Although, there were 2 detractions: clouds were minimal and the heat was a bit intense and the concession stands were inadequate. So the fans had to stand in long lines for their drinks and food.
Over twenty musical acts performed over the 2 days are these are pretty much the most memorable:
Spirit
Al Cooper
Blood, Sweat & Tears
Canned Heat
Chicago Transit Authority
Joe Cocker
Creedence Clearwater Revival
Grand Funk Railroad
Tommy James & The Shondells
The Staple Singers
Johnny Winter
Janis Joplin
Led Zeppelin
This festival was organized by a group of friends and acquaintances that had a love of music and the peaceful counter culture of the time. They included Chris Cowing, Tom Kurrus, Robin Conant and eventually Alex Cooley. All of the planning occurred in a rather short amount of time, just over maybe 4-5 months. Cooley turned out to be a late add on, but he was a natural fit as he owned a night club with live bands and was already involved in the music scene. He also had a strong business acumen, so he went on to become the primary force behind the Texas International Pop Festival a few weeks later, and most importantly, he went on to spear head the much larger and more successful 1970 Atlanta Pop Festival the following summer. He also put together the Mar Y Sol Pop Festival in Puerto Rico April 1972.
