THE FIRST AND DEFINITIVE RECORDING THAT INTRODUCED PSYCHEDELIC MUSIC GENRE TO THE WORLD.Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band was the Beatles departure from mainstream rock & roll to experimental instrumentation, drug-induced recording sessions, coded lyrics and messages to an eager youth awaiting a paradigm shift in music. This award is iconic, noting 11-million units in sales at the time it was made.
Sgt. Pepper's certainly was entirely different to anything which had gone before, and although it has been much imitated since, it remains today a unique, epochal record - one which revolutionized the entire recording industry and caused such vast repercussions that its influence will very probably be felt for as long as music is written and performed.
The senior engineer, Geoff Emerick said in an interview,
“The Beatles insisted that everything on Sgt. Pepper had to be different,” say Emerick, “so everything was either distorted, limited, heavily compressed or treated with excessive equalization. We had microphones right down the bells of the brass instruments and headphones turned into microphones attached to violins. We plastered vast amounts of echo onto vocals, and sent them through the circuitry of the revolving Leslie speaker inside a Hammond organ. We used giant primitive oscillators to vary the speed of instruments and vocals and we had tapes chopped to pieces and stuck together upside down and the wrong way round.”
At John Lennon's insistence, at the very end of the record, there was nonsensical Beatles chatter from the recording studio chopped up on tape and then pieced back together randomly and laid down as the final recording played out, so that anyone listening would say, "What the hell is that." It made no sense. Everything on Sgt. Pepper's was different.
And everything on the award is different, including the paisley fabric backing that lends itself to the psychedelic theme.
There were only a few of these found in my father's workshop when he passed. He made hundreds and hundreds of GOLD & PLATINUM awards for the music industry and over-produced all orders from the record labels for "aftermarket" needs. I inherited his estate and have listed awards and other music memorabilia since his passing in early 2016 and will continue to list new items as I categorize them from his inventory.
