ROMULUS AND REMUS
When Mars the Roman god of war fathered twin sons, their
mother, a vestal virgin, was put to death. Their grandfather
ordered the babies, Romulus and Remus, to be drowned in
the River Tiber, but they were abandoned instead. Found
and suckled by a she wolf, they grew up with a herdsmans
family.
When they were eventually recognised, they overthrew
the King who had ordered their mothers death and decided
to build a city on the spot where the wolf found them. But
the brothers could not agree whose name the new city
should bear so they quarrelled and Remus was killed.
Romulus founded Rome in 753 BC and ruled it for 37
years. When he died, Mars returned to earth in a flaming
chariot to reclaim his son.
