Hasbro’s Tiger Electronics division launched the VideoNow system, a portable video player aimed at children, in 2003. The original VideoNow only offered monochrome video but despite this it was a popular product, selling 1.2 million players and 4 million discs in 2003. At the time, portable DVD players were large and bulky, and until products such as Game Boy Advance Video, miniDVD, and the 5th generation iPod came out, there were few options for children to watch video on the move.
VideoNow used non-standard sized optical discs, apparently based on the audio Compact Disc format. These were known as Personal Video Discs (PVDs) and the discs for VideoNow were 85mm in diameter (compared to 120mm for a standard Compact Disc) with a capacity of up to 25 minutes of video. Only mono sound was available as the video information took up one of the audio channels.
