Soon after the Soviet Army adopted the ZPU-2 anti-aircraft machine gun, it turned out that it did not fully meet the requirements of the airborne troops. Therefore, in 1950, NTK GAU issued an order to plant No. 525 for the development of a 14.5-mm coaxial anti-aircraft machine gun UZPU-2 for the airborne troops. Field tests of the UZPU-2 took place in 1952; it was put into service in 1954 under the designation ZU-2.
The design of the ZU-2 is largely similar to the design of the ZPU-1 and consists of two 14.5-mm KPVT machine guns, a gun carriage and sighting devices.
